What happened to all the big names?

not many years ago many makers of well-respected instruments , semiconductor devices seem have had sort of collective attack of madness.

why?

for example hp became agilent, split again avago , keysight.

motorola -> on-semi

marconi -> ifr

siemens -> infineon.

philips -> nxp.

etc.

i'm not marketing expert, seems daft throw away world respected name
something unknown....

coca-cola or kfc or ford  or...........  etc wouldn't dream of .

or vw ( ah - hmmm  - perhaps they're thinking ).

at least in uk when post office rebranded 'consignia' (?!) there such outcry dropped idea.

try again - why ? - pass me marketing guru .

i cannot address of changes can outline happened hp.

once bill , dave passed, road @ hp became bit bumpy. personal computers , printing paid bills vertical integration supported business in past, became large part of operation overhead. building pc's , putting ink , toner in cartridges didn't need different divisions had accumulated in process of building test , measurement empire.

enter new ceo, fresh blood straighten things out. ceo 1 carley fiorina of at&t , lucent fame. had nack being in right place @ right time , knew how manipulate stock values best of them. identified cash cow pc's , went out on theme. had bean counters sell wasn't nailed down, , was, generate cash buy compaq, who's assets included digital equment corp, thought being they'd own market in pc's , unix workstations forever.

that went on proverbial turd in punch bowl. didn't understand market, unix business dead, no ne wanted admit it. in insuing blood bath of red ink, hp laid off on 30,000 workers, first in corporate history.

my timing on things here on wrong i'm working memory , cannot find quick source verify, welcome corrections time-line if matters anyone.

the hp board got on infighting long enough fire in 2005, after many money losing years. mark hurd promoted within hp put thinks on track. more evident of hp's revenue came printing. decided test , instrument devisions, along support verticals, not big money makers, compared ink , toner, decided spun off separate entities. since imaging market far lions share of revenue, decided that group keep hewlett-packard name , since bill , dave gone, shortened "hp".

mark hurd returned hp profitability ousted board due personal conduct issues, forget sordid details ugly.

the t&m group started out agilent. time progressed, vertical businesses appeared make money on own spun off, giving avago optical semiconductors along few other bits , pieces, , renaming test equipment group keysight. believe avago product line (and manufacturing lines) has been sold again, i'm unsure stands although know company still sources optical fiber , transceivers once known hp products.

overall, hewlett-packard lesson in how industry titans crash , burn when there no succession plan , many family members of founders sit on board of directors members not possessing businesses accumem of predecessors.
