to culminate 2 weeks of sheer bliss ubuntu, tried log on windows: , it's gone. still can log pretty looking, entirely empty screen formerly occupied windows xp part of laptop. in other words, can choose os; ubuntu; when choosing windows instead, log windows, end empty screen.

installed under wupi (not meant to, mind you, see below); if has reasonable idea how remedy fast, that'd neat. doubt it. ubuntu reaaaaaaallly messed up.

summary of 2 beautiful weeks in dark ages of computing

story of not-so-brave knight lots of time on hands fighting windmills

prologue:

installed ubuntu read book (hacking: art of exploitation). book comes no longer supported 7.10. system didn't recognize ethernet/wireless, and, despite support 2 year ubuntu using friend, , background of sort comps, failed remedy this. along way, beautiful, foreboding experiences.

the challenge

- before knowing deeper ins of ubuntu (had last used unix in 2002), recommended path (per intel instructions kerner drivers) includes kernel module modifications, kernel recompilations , such (as know). sounded svelte who, @ point, proud again remember mkdir , cd. that, surprisingly, didn't work out
- let's try ndiswrapper. going intel, download drivers. oups, neither in format ndiswrapper needs.
- let's try sourceforge. following links official sourceforge ndiswrapper pages wireless card windows drivers, find myself (a) @ 1 blind link, , (b) 1 of private person sharing travel experiences , such. cool.
- smart enough pick drivers off windows drivers folder. great!
- on installing ndiswrapper. wait, can't. build errors. tsssh.

the resolution...or seemed

decide install 9.10 dual boot.
- let's iso burn , installed!
- oups, despite integrity checks of burn etc, installation jumps off error message
- find wupi. mind you, not said great, let's not use boot disk. didn't have option.
- wupi works fine...well, until wupi related destroyed entire windows xp

the renewed challenge

- takes me day yahoo running under thunderbird. satisfying when does
- try , that, doesn't work right out of box. , decide happy make dumb box doing need instead of wasting day on each challenge
- need: coding platform; internet
- let's nice ide
- let's install qt. damn, installs, doesn't work
- well, eclipse? install sdk , plugin (vis synaptic); follow instructions cdt web page; oups, build error. doesn't work either.

summary of 2 weeks time:

- lost windows
- got linux command line
- got basic internet. mind you, less can in internet in windows

seriously, people caring ubuntu. u. doesn't need argue on whether or not (gasp) gimp on 10.4 cd rom. if care ubuntu, to

- work reasonable effort
- don't have blind links or pages describing version 2004 tersely
- , don't destroy other os might have on comp


realize done people want create , support community. focus on 'what wallpaper' opposed 'let's version works out of box, sort of working 1 day worth of effort, , can not access, install reasonably recent basic software.' you're not competing windows; you're working small group of new , old-school geeks, who, me, want this. need wrote; not loooong debate whether wallpaper brown.

so tried out live cd load system , worked there , when tried install got messed up? , installed on separate partition double boot winxp?

btw laptops have more issues linux. desktops work... @ least tried livecd.
