Thread: Repairing GRUB to add my Debian install.

hi!

have problem grub. i've tried install debian 5.0.3 on separate system partition , went except grub setting (couldn't install grub/boot(?) on /dev/sda partition have in kubuntu, /dev/sdax or /dev/sdbx, x number, i've chosen 1 of them). after install had messy grub, entries debian system (but looked if there kubuntu entries, name changed debian, because had 3 of them, many linux kernels in kubuntu, not sure here). none of debian entries worked, showed boot error, think numbered 22. i've forgot debian , reinstalled kubuntu 9.10.

have 2 questions:
1) how repair grub in such situation access other systems? have made 3 separate partitions installing different linux systems, test them, i'd sure that, if goes wrong can kubuntu use every day. possible?
2) update-grub command gives output:
code:
generating grub.cfg ... found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-17-generic found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-17-generic found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-16-generic found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-16-generic found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic found memtest86+ image: /memtest86+.bin found windows vista (loader) on /dev/sda2 found debian gnu/linux (5.0.3) on /dev/sda5 done
why don't see debian entry after reboot? (it's old install story above, didn't format mentioned /sda5 partition after failure). can enter never-used debian system?

i got reasonably @ grub-legacy, , went , changed grub2 .... can point posts i'm using learn new grub, maybe that'll help.

grub2 basics. relevant you, perhaps, #6. adding entries grub 2, #13. reinstalling grub 2 livecd, , #16. restoring grub2 / xp / vista / win 7 bootloaders. there's lot of useful grub2 links @ end.

when put grub on /dev/sdax, it's on partition rather in master boot record drive. that's not problem, in mbr need point grub or else won't used. #16 above addresses that, although it's not method i've used myself.

accessing debian installs, that's matter of getting right menuentry lines 40_custom file in /etc/grub.d/, discussed in #6. update-grub supposed find new bootable partitions, if doesn't, that's manual method. problem is, don't have many examples. maybe search on "ubuntu grub2 menuentry debian"?

(don't forget grub2 has weirdest numbering scheme: start 0 drives, start 1 partitions. think did on purpose intelligence test or .)
