Thread: Windows Vista -- Two HDs

i have windows vista installed on 1 of physical hds (my c:\ drive 250gb capacity). other physical hd (with d:\ , e:\) has 750gb capacity , on 500gb free.

new ubuntu , have prepared cd installation of vers. 9.10-desktop-i386. place on same physical drive d:\ , e:\. have finshed complete backup of hd.

should partition hd (containing d:\ , e:\) before starting installation, , if yes, how should perform partitioning?

thank you!

if finished complete backup of second hdd, , assuming windows installation on c:, easiest thing deleting partitions instead of resizing.
boot ubuntu cd, try ubuntu option, , open gparted (system-administration). top right select correct hdd.
delete partitions on it. click big green tick mark button in gparted toolbar execute commands (otherwise shceduled , exiting gparted not make change on hdd).
create 1 or 2 primary partitions ntfs, size as want. leave rest of hdd unallocated, not create partitions linux @ moment. again have execute commands green button.
when done reboot without cd in windows , check if fine. put data in newly created partitions keep backup still.
go bios , make second drive first boot option.
boot ubuntu cd, install ubuntu option, , in step 4 tell use largest available free space (the unallocated space left) , install ubuntu there. or create partitions manually space if that's want , if know how it. in last screen, before clicking install, click on advanced , make sure bootloader installed on second disk, called /dev/sdb. can see called in step 4.

that's it.
in case ubuntu installer in step 4 shows first disk, briefly select erase , use whole disk option (just temporary). enable drop down list under , select second disk there. make sure select use largest available free space option , proceed forward.
