Dictionary: what is the difference between a .clam and a .udc file?

i'm trying find out how dictionary works in cs4. here indesign says in 1 part (p167):

if want use language dictionaries previous version of indesign or incopy, use system find command locate user dictionary files (.udc), , add them list of dictionaries in dictionary preferences.

in next paragraph says:

by default, hyphenation , spelling exceptions located in user dictionary files stored outside document on computer indesign installed (dictionary file names end .clam or .not extension).

so, there have "user dictionary files" being assigned 2 different extensions. first quote tells me .udc, second 1 says .clam, , i'd know these files contain , difference is. no help. ".clam" occurs once in 703 pages.

ques: have located .clam file  buried deep within users > library > application support. use me? i'm hoping contains words added while spell checking, words appear otherwise lost.

thanks hints.

udc extension older versions of indesign. other files came cs4.
