hi linuxcss, try identify happens when attach modem:

- boot without modem, wait system load
(if using usb rs232 cable or i/f not attach it)
- not run communication/fax etc. program
- open terminal window , try: sudo dmesg -c
(this show system activity till , 'clear' log. next simple dmesg show 'new' activity)
- attach modem, power on
- wait 30-40 seconds
- terminal: dmesg
- terminal: lsusb
- terminal: uname -a

post output last dmesg (not previous 'sudo dmesg -c') till 'uname -a'.

regards,
george
