most folks understand how create text in photoshop. select type tool toolbox, or tap "t" key on keyboard. then, in character palette set attributes font, color, size, etc. simple click in document window mark spot may begin typing unbounded "point" text. or, click , drag in document window create paragraph text box. type out text, tap "enter" key commit text new layer.
it's pretty straightforward, , photoshop offers decent set of tools adjust how text looks. 1 hitch long-timers tell about, though: it's accepted photoshop isn't best application using if have have create lot of text because doesn't have of adjustment functions necessary produce large amounts of professional-quality text. well, real world being is, sometimes, , users, photoshop application have work with; might make best of it, right?
so, once have text entered onto layer in document, how reselect either of or portion , navigate through easily? follows answer of questions.
note: keyboard shortcuts follow assume using mac. if you're using windows, substitute ctrl key "command."
double-click on boxed 't' thumbnail on desired text layer in layers palette. select , highlight of text on layer.
then, if want, can use keyboard shortcuts move "blinking bar" type tool cursor through text.
assuming text enclosed in click-and-dragged out paragraph text box...
when text highlighted:
- "home" key move cursor beginning of first line of text.
- "end" key move cursor end of last line of text.
when text not highlighted, cursor flashing within text:
- "home" key moves cursor beginning of line it's in.
- "end" key moves cursor end of line it's in.
- command + "home" moves cursor beginning of first line of text.
- command + "end" moves cursor end of last line of text.
- shift + "home" selects text cursor position beginning of line it's in.
- shift + "end" selects text cursor position end of line it's in.
- shift + command + "home" selects text cursor position beginning of first line of text.
- shift + command + "end" selects text cursor position end of last line of text.
arrow keys can used select text in various ways.
when cursor flashing within text:
- shift + right arrow cumulatively selects text 1 character or space @ time, cursor position, progressing toward end of text.
- shift + left arrow cumulatively selects text 1 character or space @ time, cursor position, progressing toward beginning of text.
- ⇒ add command key select whole words @ time, in either direction.
- shift + arrow selects text cursor position next line above cursor.
- shift + down arrow selects text cursor position forward next line below cursor position.
- ⇒ add command key select text starting cursor position, , accumulating either beginning of first line, or forward end of last line.

keep close eye on type tool cursor move near , away hunk of text in document window; change form indicate different functions.
- when see plain old "i-bar" cursor, so:
...that means it's ready select position within text, or select hunk of text.
- when see "boxed i-bar" cursor, so:
...that means cursor outside of selectable area current text, , ready click (to start right in typing unbounded point text) or click-n-drag (to create paragraph text box). will, of course, create new text layer.
how can visual indicator of selectable area current text begins , ends without blindly moving type tool cursor around text? double-click on "boxed-t" thumbnail in layers palette. text layer become highlighted in document window. see black area surrounds text? shows actual space occupied characters. if type tool cursor inside highlighted area, display plain "i-bar" cursor. if it's outside of area, display "boxed i-bar" cursor.
want force photoshop create new type layer, though you're seeing plain i-bar cursor? hold shift key, either click, or click-n-drag out paragraph text box.
