i find little confusing have set 1 times article preferences in content preferences disable artcle features.
also have set menu item parameters - component disable items.

you think that's confusing? there 3 places set parameter values! ;)
on article manager page, can use preferences button establish global parameters articles. that's joomla! use if never set parameter again.
--> example, can "general speaking", don't want author name print.
when create menu item article-type component (i.e., link article, category blog, section list, etc.), can override global parameters menu item, only.
--> continuing same example, can say, article-category blog, *do* want author name print. menu item parameters override global parameters - 1 menu item. menu item, author names print on blog.
as if that's not enough flexibility, can set parameters each , every article write. can ignore this, if level of sensitivity not desired.
---> again, continuing example, let's have article in category selected in previous step not want author's name print with. so, can "hide author name" article. in case, on category blog, each article show author's name, per menu item parameter except article indicated don't want author name appear. in case, hidden.
if create other article category blogs , not override global parameters menu item parameters, , not override menu item parameters article parameters, author name not print.
now, tell me how possibly find confusing.
seriously, take bit of learning, when figure out, it's pretty powerful stuff. developers rock!
