Thread: poor performance for x264 in Ubuntu.
so last, oh, 3 or 4 hours now, i've been trying videos play in ubuntu. have default player, have vlc, (apparently) installed mplayer, won't play @ all.
having horrible screen tearing standard definition .avi's in vlc, fixed setting vsync in catalyst control center on or whatever is.
now, have tried run 720p x264 video. plays, not well. audio fine, video jerky in vlc, , in totem it's mess of screen tearing (although video no jerk on player).
have spent hours trying videos play. makes no sense. playing video should simplest thing in world os do, ubuntu pulling teeth. have never been frustrated while using computer. going on here?
btw, installed every single thing needed use mplayer still not work. player comes not play type of file.
system specs:
2.2ghz dual core (intel)
3gb ram
1gb radeon hd 4650 vid card
asus ipibl-lb mobo
enjoying ubuntu until got around trying watch videos. maybe minutes away going vista. @ least on there can watch full 1080p videos if want no problems.
please stupid noob, sick , tired of sending data msoft day long! ubuntu insane!
have installed ati display driver (fglrx)?
have disabled compiz (i.e. desktop effects)?
have enabled xvideo hardware overlay? required smooth video playback without tearing. when had ati graphics while ago, xvideo had enabled manually in driver running "sudo aticonfig --ovt xv" @ least once. may reason why mplayer not work @ all. see driver's readme file details.
far know (ati users correct me please) there no hardware acceleration h.264 playback available ati cards on linux. right works nvidia. cpu should able decode 720p h.264, 1080p may continue problem.
if consider switching linux, you'll want nvidia graphics.
