Thread: Is Ubuntu fit for network use - 8hrs of wasted time later - maybe
first let me i've heard linux years , did @ getting linux machine around 2 years ago, couldn't find said "this or machine work linux", had assume there problems. and, because didn't know linux (except hard drive unit turned out have linux - , glad once learnt unix) - might aright nerds me, wife sleep me again if got angry half baked operating system.
- micro$oft did bit - mouse stopped working , microsoft's driver , fix problem? , latest next upgrade slow machine more fix except force people buy new software? no!
so, machine operating system had changed vista, , since micro$oft caused problem, didn't want install xp ... , why tried ubuntu (i think preferred choice 2 years ago).
problem 1 - not make cd boot up. solved downloading new version , using dvd instad of cds.
problem 2 - when said "use documents , settings windows" during install, never occurred me try download 60gbytes of photos on network drive onto 12gbit partition. has got fixed, because ended having reformat partition
problem 3 - how uninstall ubuntu? great operating system lets people stop using giving them feeling "hey on excelled @ end ... perhaps i'll give try".
problem 4 - when loaded kept saying there problem power settings , after login turn off , come login, , log in , turn off , come log in. hence clean install - , time realised ran out of disc space , removed photos had taken hour downloading shouldn't. (since latter reinstall, problem seems have disappear - assume essential system information couldn't stored cause entire space taken pictures of birthday parties)
problem 5 - keeps saying battery 49.8% of capacity - care? it's laptop, not portable - sound suspiciously close 50% software error!
problem 6 - went runescape test performance against vista, , **cking *ell parlava? had drop out of windows command line, , thank god i'd had experience, because if hadn't i'd have turned tail , gone , bought windows machine. sun/java such idiots.
problem 7 - network drives- network drives- network drives- network drives- network drives- network drives- network drives- network drives- network drives- network drives- network drives- network drives.
first, (and in retrospect) remember see various "sub-drives" on fsg, until software upgraded 0.14 0.17 -- disappeared (but knows, did object because many mounts)
, why i'm writing, because had expected problems (which didn't many), honest, given huge number of linux machines running on servers, had never occurred me linux such pig of system network drives.
boils down this. our family, each has own space on network drives, in windows access //fsg/<name>. kids couldn't read/write each other's drives, parents can. there family drive (i.e. mapped drive on each login) , there "adults" drive contains porn ... no joking ... contains downloaded software, backups etc, part of system, , there's drive home webpage - on test webpages.
so, have our own signin, , benefit of that, kids see own drive , family's , there no hassle "freddy's reading ... or " ... it's own private space, can backup - , can use machine homework, without fighting on fastest machine - cause has have because "doing homework".
so, 1 of first things tried map network drive local ... correct network drives appeared on desktop folders "my_network", "family_network". it?
searched "map network drive on linux" ... believe ntfs formatted drive (i don't need know on windows) , information seemed suggest had use mountmanager or ntfs configuration tool. well, crap advice was, because couldn't see way configure except internal drive - wasted time.
found simple suggestion of creating sh file lines gvfs-mount smb://fsg/<name> , putting in startup applications. well, worked fine when ran command line, did work when put in list of applications on startup ... , can pigs fly?
so, after couple of hours of trying mount drives no success , trying mount drives getting blank folder contents, worked out needed in fstab of form (and leave here in case helps):-
//fsg.lan/<name> /media/<name> sbmfs _netdev,username=obama,password=peanuts,auto,file_ mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,gid=1001
fsg.lan network name assigned internal dns fsg drive (which used reached fsg in windows)
<name> name of person/drive,username, password (one of valid) names supplied fsg device, , gid group id of new group assigned part of family ... lets view network drive.
worked ok, first "family" drive, appeared magic on desktop of everyone, obviously, because drive being assigned single user/passwd, either use drive or no one!
so, next tried setting fstab "noauto", in theory should allow me put "sudo mount /media/<name>" in config file each person, thought have shown drives had been mounted. of course, when put such file in list of startup tasks, no **** wouldn't work, , in case, drives hadn't been mounted appeared on desktop (and it's difficult enough explaining kids network drive, without making more complicated putting load of mess on desktop --- bit buying brand new car, , having liberally paint diskdrive icons on it.
anyway tried putting "sudo mount" commands worked on desktop, in .profile , various other files , of course none of worked.
finally, spotted mount drive using places->connect server, selecting windows share type.
unfortunately, unfortunately, unfortunately, unfortunately, unfortunately,
but
useless, useless, useless, useless, useless, useless, useless, useless,
because, when mount drive way, can't see files under e.g. gimp or several other applications audacity, whilst "works" far file viewers concerned, conclusion after 8 hours meddling ubuntu
ubuntu/linux, isn't fit use on network. (but see later)
solutions pretty simple:
1. fstab, has able accept username , password based on user. e.g. $user, $passwd, or @ least default "user", parameter user's username , password.
2. fstab, must make use of "~", credentials can stored in user file.
3. there has option/correction ubuntu drives listing in fstab, not yet mounted, not displayed.
4. , (or), mount command has work on batch on startup, , batch must different each, , mount command must use credentials file password can hidden.
but hey, it's looks wonderful, kids impressed - , addicted nibbles - fit purpose - no!
in short, can see no way of e.g. attaching network drive allows me edit pictures laptop, doesn't require have same access, , potentially have whole directories of e.g. backup work pictures mistakenly deleted children.
.... mouse working!!
..... crashes every time shut down
ubuntu 9.10 <computer> tty1
<computer? login: init: statd main process (2182) killed kill signal
init: stad main process ended, respawning
[ 759.280050] cifs vfs: no response cmd 50 mid 63
[ 815.296055] cifs vfs: no response cmd 50 mid 39
{{funny there many more last time - many powered off
link number of cifs have in fstab!!!!!! i.e. two!}}
possibly it's because 1 post told me use commandline command add system list of things do, , i've got go through 100 sites finding 1 mentioned .... or possibly quicker, reinstall ubuntu third time! .... or perhaps uninstall, altogether - , put in operating system work network drives xp, or perhaps better 2000!!!!
correction
work on network gimp. perhaps didn't work on 9.14, , on 9.17, working today. doesn't work on compizconfig settingmanager ... kids mucking on while, , why needed gimp make pictures.
conclusion
1. sitting writing on windows machine, linux machine 4 drives. 2 automatically loaded require - should able have different drives on each user's desktop.
2. 2 other drives, i've clicked on bookmark, appear wanted, , if work out how create bookmark same actions on desktop, might conclude ubuntu fit purpose (except way have install java runescape)
3. setting disk drives should included in installation of ubuntu. not because has included @ stage, because if search on "mounting drive in ubuntu" ... takes down blind alley, , having user presented question "do wish bookmark server (or whatever ubuntu terminology) ... can later under places->connect server. point have stop people going down blind alleyway. firstly telling terminology "mount drive" windows term , secondly telling them possible in ubuntu (unless know, reading internet suggests isn't possible).
4. talk sun java install ... it's crap!
5. when ask want transfer documents , settings, remember not keeps documents on local drive, put note ... includes documents on network drives ... include option: settings ... transfer documents myself. ... better still give tick list sizes of various pictures, documents etc.
... , thinking (the computer doesn't have documents on it, few personal settings, email wouldn't harm)
finally done! went lot better thought (except network ... may lack of communication more software), , it's close being hassle free install if microsoft worried!
--------------------------
postscript:
1. shoud mention if bookmark drives appear on desktop, disappear when machine switched off/on
2. removed 2 drives fstab, rebooted, , still cannot see contents on fsg (freecom unit linux, discs formatted work windows - shouldn't problem!) - can see contents of shared drives on other pcs on network - , ask login username/password.
checked mtab ... no mention of fsg (i thought entry there might confuse something) ... checked user login ... still can't see contents!
3. still delay @ switchoff "<computer> login", other 2 errors have gone away, it's these result of config in fstab.
4. , why there no way go network when open file view? ... that's partly led me believe wasn't useable network, , had mount drives before use, rather access them @ point of trying save latest artwork!
i sorry read tough experience setting samba shares. future reference, suggest install "system-config-samba". it's gui wanted. , there no need edit fstab, add mount commands startup list, etc.
