Thread: Op System Selection - What does all this mean ?

i have few questions i'm seeing when boot , operating system selection page. first little background:

dual booting ubuntu windows xp
small hard drive ...so want keep that's not needed off
switched 9.04 9.10 b/c didn't how 9.10 ran.

here's see when operating sys selection:

operating system selection

ubuntu 9.04 kernel 2.6.28-17 – generic
ubuntu 9.04 kernel 2.6.28-17 – generic (recovery mode)
ubuntu 9.04 kernel 2.6.28-11 – generic
ubuntu 9.04 kernel 2.6.28-11 – generic (recovery mode)
ubuntu 9.04 memtest 86+

other operating systems

microsoft windows xp home addition

ubuntu 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-18 – generic (on/dev/sda 5)
ubuntu 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-18 – generic (recovery mode) (on/dev/sda 5)
ubuntu 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-17 – generic (on/dev/sda 5)
ubuntu 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-17 – generic (recovery mode) (on/dev/sda 5)
ubuntu 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-16 – generic (on/dev/sda 5)

here questions:

why see 4 instances of 9.04, normal, & needed ?

9.04 memtest 86+ , needed ?

why see 5 instances of 9.10, normal, & needed ?

sda 5 ? see have sdb.

getting rid of 9.10 stuff free hard drive space ?

what's best way rid of 9.10 stuff assuming free space ? have 9.04 disc.

1 , 3: different iterations of same operating system kernel versions acquired through updates. update makes entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst reflect new kernel version, keeps old 1 there in case run problems. can edit file make show want see.

2: memtest memory test can run, don't know it.

4: /dev/sda5 partition numbered 5 9.10 installed on. xp on sda1, , may have extended partition sda2 holds rest (3-5 or 6) depending on how set up. sdb going device, external drive or usb thumb stick , contain sdb1. sda5 on sda device.

5: yes

6: install gparted or gnome partition editor. find /dev/sda5 , delete it. resize partition adjacent (your linux / partition or /home if have one) take space (back important data first). partition setups pretty creative , if need help, show output of sudo fdisk -l
