Using IR Sensors to Count objects on conveyors

hi,
this project potato farm. have planted multiple small test plots need collect data on after harvested. need able count number of potatoes in each plot efficiently. have washer places each potato on 1 of 10 conveyor belts based on size. have ir sensor on each belt counts number of potatoes goes through belt. if possible, have way have number counted each belt sent pc (on excel sheet or tsv file or similar). looking online, seems possibly done use of arduino board, i've never used 1 , have extremely limited knowledge of them. if tell me if  possible and/or give me idea of how need done appreciated.

ah, sure, can done. ir led on 1 side, photodiode on other. moment potato passes through goes dark , that's easy count. there have been few threads counting objects in last few weeks alone.

but: have make sure have 1 potato @ time, no overlapping, space in between. otherwise they're not counted. have ensure sensors remain clean while placed next dirty potatoes - dirt on sensors , it's waiting forever huge potato pass.

a more reliable method may video camera above belt image recognition software doing counting. can handle larger volumes, harder/more expensive implement.
