Identifying a transistor

i'm trying identify transistor on old pcb. it's power output transistor in 12vdc circuit.
as seen in photo, marking says tip42, , under motorola symbol, , numbers 728.
i've googled 30 minutes no luck. silkscreen under part label part q2, , pins b, c, e.
would know how find out more of part is, know how replace it?  guessing pnp or npn power transistor that's guess.

you need learn how use google.  got hundreds of results.   like 1 "https://www.fairchildsemi.com/products/discretes/bipolar-transistors/high-power-bjts/tip42.html"
