Thread: Program directories...

i should have figured out already, haven't found clear explanation in guide or reference, i'm going ask. i'm running hardy.

can give me, or point me clear explanation of how ubuntu programs organized within directory structure of os? difference between
/bin
/usr/bin
/usr/local/bin

or between
/lib
/usr/lib
/usr/local/lib

why there /usr/share , /usr/local/share?

example, i've been looking through forums advice on managing adobe plugins firefox, , seems confusing determine plugin files supposed go. go /usr/local/... {home}/.mozilla, , saw 1 post suggested adobe reader found under /opt, directory empty on system. there guiding logic behind these seemingly arbitrary placements? can never seem predict i'm going find binaries of given program.

thanks!

< /usr/local >

this install apps , other files use on local machine. if machine part of network, /usr directory may physically on machine , can shared many networked linux workstations. on kind of network, /usr/local directory contains stuff not supposed used on many machines , intended use @ local machine only.

/usr/local/bin represent location binaries or start-up scripts non-apt installed packages end up. often, /opt non-package management software installed.

page explains some. i'll check if there's ubuntu-specific page also.
