Moving from one Hard Drive to another...problems...

this workflow problem i've run newbie...

so, i'm out on road taking pictures , downloading them nikon d90 wd passport 500 jump drive.  prelim editing , moving collections, etc.

now, home road , move them home hard drive g-drive 500gb.  i've lost work did on prelim editing.

is there quick way overcome problem? 

or there better workflow follow?

i'm newbie , quite willing learn "correct" way.

when moved files wd passport drive, did import them catalog? how works - created catalog of images when on road presume stored on passport 500 drive. export catalog created when on road , import same catalog onto home lightroom setup. hope explained well. can confusing.
